Little Girls in Pretty Boxes

This story is about Olympic hopefuls in women's gymnastics, and the struggles, physical sacrifices, politics, and at times drug abuse, that the athletes have to deal with. Swoozie Kurtz (Cruel Intentions, Liar Liar) stars as a gymnasium mom and major cheerleader for her very talented and athletic daughter who has a chance to make the Olympic team.

Musically we wanted to incorporate the innocence and delicate childlike feelings of our main characters with the dramatic element of their desires for success & approval. We felt the scope of the picture was very intimate in it's nature and for instrumentation we chose a chamber group of strings, english horn (Jon Clarke), flute (Jimmy Walker) and piano (Starr Parodi).. We utilized long vocals lines (Aeone) in some of the pieces to reflect the fluidity in so many of the gymnastic and dance movements.

We were also asked to write a piece that a floor routine would be choreographed to and it was great going to the set, meeting the gymnasts who were wonderful (especially ---- one of the co-stars who is blind in one eye and totally deaf ) who did an amazing routine to our music. She was an inspiration to all!

This is the 4th film we have scored for director Christopher Leitch and the first time we had worked with producer Jay Benson. We had such a limited time to write the music but everything really flowed, thanks to the vision and camaraderie of the director, producer and picture editor and we were ultimately very happy with the results.
